Frigid May Day Festival

The Mayday Festival was a windy icy day unfortunately since I was next to the lake in Powderhorn Park, volunteering at the Aldrich Arts Collaborative table. It is a non-profit arts organization located in S. Minneapolis. I was in their most recent show, "Out of Earth, Art", where they displayed environmentally themed art from local artists and also kids from their arts classes in the same gallery. The activity for kids/adults at the table was spring themed as might make sense for a Mayday festival, but not so in MN. I was surprised at how many children and other passers by actually stopped to chat and participate in decorating small paper cups with paint to be used as planters for spring flowers or vegetables. We still got to see the amazing puppet dance and bird boats coming across the lake so it was  still a good experience overall; but I hope next year will be spring-like and warm!

CSA: Community Supported Art - Call for Entries

The Springboard for the Arts is a local non-profit that created the CSA program 3 years ago in the twin cities area. It was inspired by the traditional meaning of a CSA; (community supported agriculture) but with art instead of produce. Artists submit their artwork to the program and upon acceptance, they are granted a stipend of $1,000 to created 50 pieces of art for "CSA boxes". Then the general public can purchase a box for $300 which includes 3 pieces of original artwork. All artwork must be smaller then 18" X 12" X 12" and can be any visual art, music, performing art or writing. The submission deadline is fast approaching, being this Friday March 18th, but this is the online submission date, so there is still time! More guidelines for the CSA program can be found here.

3X3 Magazine- Call for Entries

There is a Call for Entries going on now until March 4th for 3X3 Magazine; the only contemporary all illustration magazine published in the US. It is open to "all illustrators, art directors, graphic designers, editors and publishers in all countries for commissioned and non-commissioned work produced and/or published during the calendar year 2010." It has many different categories for entry and you can submit multiple single entries for $30 a piece or a series entry for $35, (3-5 images). They have cash prizes for best in show and gold medal winners of $750 - $1500. They also have a Student Show call for entries going on now until March 25th and an upcoming Children's Show (details soon to be announced). And for all those procrastinators out there; (like me), you can now enter your art online, so as to be sure to make the deadline. I will be entering a piece and possibly a series as well. A chance to get published in a widely distributed illustration magazine is always a welcome opportunity; and their entry fees are less than many of the other major magazines and publications out there.

The Holidays Have Come and Brought Lots of SNOW!

Here is this years holiday card and of course some are still in the mail. Its been that kind of winter so far.. It has been freezing here in MN and we had a blizzard of 18" before xmas. Then I flew home with the hubby to go to MA to visit my family we witnessed the East Coast Blizzard of 2010, which dropped 30" on some states, but about 18" in Boston. So we got tons of snow, but got to spend 4 extra days in MA visiting family and friends so I consider all the shoveling out well worth it! Happy Holidays!
